Message from The Saddleworth Village Olympics Committee
On behalf of the Saddleworth Village Olympics (‘SVO’) organising team we would like to welcome you all to this year’s Village Olympics, which this year kicks off in early September.
The ethos of the games is to promote and strengthen our community through a common interest in sport and to develop our young people through competition, friendship, learning about winning & losing and the importance of ‘having a go’ whatever the result.
This year we will have up to 1,000 children competing as members of 7 village teams, representing 13 Saddleworth villages, in 12 sports over 3 weeks of competition.
Set our below is some information you might find useful to help you get the most out of this year’s Olympics:
Event Venue’s – Our main venue is Saddleworth School with events also taking place at Churchill Playing Fields, Saddleworth Pool, Tame Valley Tennis & Squash Club, Saddleworth Rangers and Uppermill Sports Club.
Event information – You will find all the information you need before, during and after the event on this website, including event schedules, locations, competition rules, up to date results. For day to day information you will be able to access those via the Village social media.
Age Groups & Team Qualification – The Olympics are open to all the young people of Saddleworth between the ages of seven and sixteen. (Years 3 to 12 during the games).
Spirit of the Olympics - The games are really about participating and having fun. It’s good to win but it’s not the be all and end all. Please join in the spirit and remember that the event organiser, coaches, the referees and the other volunteers are doing their best. If you think someone’s got a decision wrong and it costs your child or team, please just bite you lip and give them the benefit of the doubt.
Thank You - We wouldn’t be here today without the support and dedication of a list of people and voluntary organisations that is too long to mention. This starts with the organising team, the village team managers and coaches, the local sports clubs, Oldham Sports Development helping out with coaching and refereeing at events, and the local charities and business that provide much needed support. There are many others and if you are reading this you will know who you are and how much we appreciate your contribution. The games would not happen without you.
Big thank you to 20-20 for joining our proud sponsor initiative. If other local businesses would like to get involved then please e-mail us at email@example.com
Thanks to Isobel and everyone else involved in the Graham Hill Trophy, crown green bowling competition at Dobcross Band Club on Sunday 21st July 2019. A sportsman's dinner earlier in the year in honour of Graham (a former bowler in the Saddleworth league) and staunch supporter of the
Olympics, helped to raise £1,500.
Would you like to get involved? - If so, please have a word with any member of the committee, they are easy to spot, they will be those wearing blue SVO t-shirts at all the events.
And finally … on behalf of the organising committee we hope you all have a great time. Let’s hope the rain stays away.
